There are two wheels on a centerless grinder. The wheels are rotated in the same direction. The workpiece is set up inside the regulating wheel and the grinding wheel. The workpiece is supported by a work rest. The work rest is located between the wheels. The work is placed upon the work rest. The regulating wheel spins and forces the work against the grinding wheel.

Centerless grinding is classified into two types : throughfeed grinding, for which the workpiece is fed into the machine along the work rest and plunge grinding for which the workpiece is placed between the wheels on a work rest with the grinding wheel plunging into the workpiece.
